This is a TED Video I watched on great leaders

I found this TED Talk video about great leaders. I found it interesting because people always wonder what characteristics make a great leader. Many people point to Michael Jordan, George Washington, and Martin Luther King Jr. as great leaders, but what makes them great? According to Simon Sinek, everybody is born with the ability to lead, but the best leaders all have a common characteristic. They don't worry about what they are doing or why they do it, but rather why they do it. All the great leaders think and act from the inside out. I felt Simon had some great points as to what makes a great leader.

  1. This is a great video. Leadership is hard to teach and in this generation it is hard to convince kids to be a leader and stand out when so many kids want to fit in. Leaders have to make tough decisions and sometimes say things that most people don't want to hear. This is a good message for everyone to hear.

  2. Leaders in the classroom can be anyone. Typically, when you think of a leader, you look at someone who is highly involved in the school. This doesn't always have to be the case. If someone is a great reader and interested in writing, they may be a perfect leader for my English classroom -- regardless of whether they are involved in activities or not.

  3. I like this video (they are all excellent)--I may just watch one a week for the next four years or whatever it is said to take. I don't think we develop enough leadership qualities in our students. Students who are in sports and music programs in high school have a chance to identify their potential and begin to act on it, but I think if students realized how important that trait is in many scholarship applications, they would work harder to develop it. I know I have filled out several letters of recommendation or recommendation forms that ask specifically for leadership qualities in the applicant. Sometimes I have been able to speak strongly for the student, sometimes not as much. I don't really know if there is a spot for this in my classroom (in English we are already taxed with state testing in writing and reading, but I do know that the students work on their resumes in the Career Center, so perhaps this could be shown as part of the career education the state asks us to fit in. I'm glad you found this video.

  5. I absolutely think leadership is a natural born ability or maybe even an intelligence. Some people are just born with it. Sure, others can acquire it, but I think it's a natural talent for most great leaders.
